What the drive involves

Arnhem Land is entered from Kakadu across Cahills Crossing on the East Alligator River, toward Gunbalanya, or along the Central Arnhem Road from near Katherine to Nhulunbuy on the Gove Peninsula. Roads are unsealed, with river crossings that flood in the wet. Cahills Crossing is tidal and home to saltwater crocodiles, so cross only at low tide and never on foot.

What written approval means for your hire

Written approval means the trip is approved before you collect the camper and noted on your rental agreement. Ask for it when you book: approval can be refused, or come with conditions such as the season, a satellite phone or travel with a second vehicle. Driving there without it breaches the hire terms, and damage on the way is usually not covered.

The rules for Arnhem Land differ by road and by camper. Some campers are approved for the region but not the Central Arnhem Road beyond Beswick, and some only on a guided tour; each camper page lists its rules.

Questions about Arnhem Land

Do I need a permit to visit Arnhem Land?

Yes. The Northern Land Council issues permits for most of Arnhem Land, and some areas, such as around Nhulunbuy, need permits from local organizations as well. Apply well ahead.

When can I drive into Arnhem Land?

In the dry season, roughly May to October. In the wet, rivers flood and most roads close.

How do I cross Cahills Crossing?

Drive across only at low tide, check the tide times at the crossing, and never wade or stand near the water: saltwater crocodiles live there.
