What the tracks involve

Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park is in the northern Flinders Ranges, about 660 km north of Adelaide and 100 km east of Leigh Creek. The main access roads are gravel. Italowie Gap and Weetootla Gorge campgrounds can be reached in a 2WD; Grindells Hut and Mainwater Well are 4WD only, as are the Wortupa Loop Track and the track to Lake Frome. Grindells Hut, the base for the Weetootla and Italowie Gorge hikes, is 10 km up Arkaroola Road and then 17 km of signposted 4WD track with rocky sections, steep slopes and creek crossings, about an hour from park headquarters at Balcanoona.

What permitted means for your hire

Permitted means the conditions of hire allow the camper in Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park, and the standard insurance applies while you are there. It does not reserve a vehicle or a date, and it does not cover every track nearby: the Simpson Desert and Kangaroo Island are listed separately. You add the campground booking and the fuel range.

Questions about the Gammon Ranges

Do I need a park pass for the Gammon Ranges?

No. Entry is free, and fees apply only for camping and accommodation. There are no self-registration stations, so book and pay online before you arrive or through a booking agent.

Where can I get fuel?

Arkaroola Village, next to the park, sells diesel and unleaded and has a workshop that repairs tires. Its LPG is for gas bottles only, not for vehicles.

Do the tracks close after rain?

They can. Closures may occur during and after wet weather, and the Lake Frome cultural use zone is closed to the public from 3pm to 5am daily to allow hunting. Check the park alerts before you set off.
