What the drive involves

Steep Point is in Edel Land, on the western side of Shark Bay. From the North West Coastal Highway it is about 185 km, 140 km of it unsealed and rough, about three hours of driving. The last 30 km is a single lane of soft sand winding around the dunes, and only a high-clearance four-wheel drive gets through. You pay the entry fee and let your tires down at the entry station, then register at the Steep Point Ranger Station. There is no water, food, fuel or vehicle service in Edel Land, so you carry everything for your stay.

What permitted means for your hire

Permitted means the conditions of hire allow the camper on the tracks to Steep Point, and the standard insurance applies while you are there. It does not reserve a vehicle or a date, and it does not cover Dirk Hartog Island across South Passage, which is listed separately and permitted for fewer of our campers. Keep four-wheel drive engaged on the sand and stay on the existing tracks. You add the park pass, the campsite booking and the water and fuel for the trip.

Questions about Steep Point

Do I need a permit for Steep Point?

Yes. Park entry fees apply in Edel Land and a valid park pass covers them. Register at the ranger station on arrival and display the entry permit on the dashboard. Camping is paid separately, per person per night.

Do I have to book a campsite?

Yes. The campsites at Shelter Bay, Steep Point and False Entrance must be booked before you arrive, up to 180 days ahead. A few Shelter Bay sites are kept for Dirk Hartog Island barge passengers; book those through the Steep Point Ranger Station, not online.

What tire pressure do I need for Steep Point?

Let your tires down to 20 psi or less, trailers included, at the entry station before the soft sand. The right figure depends on the vehicle, its load and its tires. Reinflate when you are back on the Useless Loop Road.
