Frequently asked questions

General

Is wild camping allowed?

Wild camping may be illegal, depending on the location, landowner and state. Unless it is indicated somewhere that camping is allowed, it is forbidden and therefore punishable to go camping or spend the night(s) there. Also note whether it is a so-called ‘day use area’, where you are only allowed to recreate between sunrise and sunset. Please know that fines are high for illegal camping, especially if you do it in combination with lighting a campfire.

Note: it is not a given that there is a sign everywhere, which is especially true for so-called private land. If you go camping on such a spot and it turns out to be private land, you can get into trouble with the landowner.

Where can I camp instead of a car park or rest area?

A good alternative to spending the night at a car park or rest area is a National Park campground. These are in the middle of nature and are either free or charge a small fee.

What does ‘bond’ mean?

The bond (security deposit) is an amount that every camper supplier charges to your credit card when you collect your booked 4WD camper. You will receive a payment confirmation then.

How high is the bond?

If you choose to travel based on standard liability, the bond will be equal to that liability amount. For example, if the standard liability is AU$6000.00, the bond will also be AU$6000.00. If you have lowered the standard liability when booking your 4WD camper, the bond will be lower as well.

When do I get my bond back?

Provided that the 4WD camper is returned undamaged, cleaned and with a refilled fuel tank, the bond will be refunded to your credit card account.

What is a single vehicle accident?

A single vehicle accident is an accident involving only your own rental vehicle. Examples of single vehicle accidents include hitting a visibly low-hanging tree branch, colliding with a kangaroo or another animal crossing the road, crashing into a (lamp)post, knocking over an electricity pole at a campsite (which happens surprisingly often!), or writing off your vehicle after falling asleep while driving.

Am I covered if alcohol is involved in an accident?

No. If alcohol is involved, you will be held liable for the full cost of any damage, regardless of the liability you have chosen.

Is a camper always supplied with bedding?

Almost every camper is supplied with bedding, including pillows, sheets, sleeping bags or doonas, sometimes at a small additional cost. Whether doonas are provided depends on the rental company and the type of camper you choose.

Rates

What are flex rates?

Most camper rental companies in Australia operate a flexible pricing system based on supply and demand. Rental rates are generally adjusted automatically each weekend, depending on vehicle availability. When availability is limited, prices may also increase during the week.

Rental rates can go up as well as down. However, as the pick-up date approaches, vehicle availability generally decreases, along with the likelihood of securing a lower rate. Prices tend to increase particularly on popular routes such as Sydney-Cairns, Brisbane-Cairns and Perth-Darwin.

Booking early therefore pays off. The price difference between booking early and booking at a later stage can exceed 30%.

How long is a quote valid?

Because rates change with availability, our quotes are generally valid until the next rate adjustment, which usually takes place over the weekend.

Can the price change after I have booked?

No. Once your booking has been confirmed, your rental price is fixed. Any subsequent price increases will not affect your reservation.

Why are there no prices listed on your website?

Most Australian 4WD camper hire companies operate with flexible rental rates. Prices can change regularly depending on the travel dates, rental duration, seasonal demand and vehicle availability. As a result, displaying fixed prices on our website could give an inaccurate impression of the actual rental costs. Instead, we provide a personalized, no-obligation quote based on your travel plans. This allows us to include any applicable discounts, compare insurance options and provide you with an accurate, up-to-date rental price.

Is the daily rental rate calculated on a 24-hour basis?

The daily rental rate for any type of camper is always calculated on the basis of calendar days. For example, if you hire a camper from 1 to 21 May inclusive, you will be charged for 21 full rental days. The first and last days of your rental are always charged as full days, regardless of the time you collect or return your camper.

If you return your camper at 10.00 am because of your return flight, you will still be charged the full daily rental rate for that day. This policy applies to all camper rental companies in Australia.

Camper hire

Is an international driving permit required?

An international driving permit is not required, provided the front of your driver’s license displays the words ‘Driving licence’.

Is a category B driver’s license sufficient to drive a camper in Australia?

All campers, including the largest motorhomes, can be driven with a category B driver’s license.

Do I need previous 4WD driving experience to be allowed to drive a 4WD camper?

Previous 4WD driving experience is not compulsory with most of our rental companies. However, some basic knowledge of four-wheel driving is strongly recommended, especially if you intend to travel on remote and challenging off-road tracks. After booking, you will receive a three-page document from us containing plenty of useful tips on driving a 4WD vehicle.

Can I take a 4WD driving course?

If you feel particularly unsure about off-road driving, we can look into arranging a 4WD training course for you. Please bear in mind that such a course usually takes a full day.

How far in advance should I book a 4WD camper?

For a trip through the Kimberley, Top End or Cape York between June and September, we recommend booking as early as possible, preferably as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. In particular, 4WD campers suitable for families and models with indoor sleeping accommodation are often fully booked many months in advance. Booking early gives you a wider choice of vehicles.

Along the way

How does 24-hour roadside assistance work?

Every 4WD camper rental includes mandatory 24-hour roadside assistance. In the event of a breakdown, simply call the assistance number provided in the vehicle manual or displayed on the windscreen. Mechanical failures that are not your fault are covered at no extra cost. However, damage caused by negligence or improper driving, such as crossing a river at excessive speed, is at the hirer’s expense. Please note that assistance may take considerably longer to arrive in remote Outback areas than in populated regions.

How likely is a breakdown?

Mechanical breakdowns are rare. Most 4WD rental vehicles are Toyotas, renowned for their reliability, with spare parts widely available throughout Australia, even in smaller Outback towns. Our advice: always drive carefully on unsealed roads and reduce your speed when conditions deteriorate. Most vehicle damage can be avoided by driving responsibly. The risk of damage increases when driving at high speeds on unsealed roads.

Can I drive the Gibb River Road in a 4WD camper?

All the 4WD campers we offer are permitted to travel along the Gibb River Road and its side tracks. Naturally, this only applies during the appropriate season, from May to October, when rainfall is relatively low and the roads are generally dry. During the wet season, from November to March, driving on unsealed roads in the Kimberley is not allowed.

Is beach driving permitted in a rental 4WD camper?

This depends on the type of 4WD camper. Beach driving is permitted with many 4WD campers, but only above the high tide line. However, there are certain models for which beach driving is strictly prohibited under all circumstances. Whether or not beach driving is permitted is clearly stated in every quote we provide.

Can a camper be taken on a ferry such as the ‘Spirit of Tasmania’?

If you wish to take a rented camper or motorhome to Tasmania, you must mention this when booking, as not every camper may go on the ferry. Alternatively, you can hire a camper on Tasmania itself, from brands such as Apollo, Britz, Cruisin and Maui. Our detailed quotes will confirm whether travel to Tasmania is permitted, provided you have mentioned this on your inquiry form.

Am I also allowed to take the ferry across to Kangaroo Island?

Almost all campers are permitted to travel on the ferry to Kangaroo Island. We strongly recommend booking your ferry crossing in advance when traveling between November and February. Although crossings are not always fully booked, the most popular departure times often are. Without a reservation, you may have to wait several hours for an available crossing, losing valuable holiday time.

Does a power outlet in a camper work when staying on an unpowered site?

No, the camper must be connected to the campsite’s mains electricity supply. In motorhomes, the air conditioning, heating and microwave will also not operate without a 240V power supply.

Route planning

How many days do I need to travel from Perth to Darwin?

Based on our extensive personal experience traveling between Perth and Darwin (in both directions) in a 4WD camper, we recommend allowing at least 36 days for this incredible journey. Although the route can be completed in less time, you would need to skip some beautiful locations and travel at a considerably faster pace. Places such as Steep Point and Mitchell Falls are difficult to include in a trip of around 28 days.

Can you help me plan my route after booking?

Yes, absolutely! After booking your 4WD camper with us, we are happy to help you put together a general route outline based on your travel dates, available time and personal interests. Having traveled extensively throughout Australia ourselves, we can recommend not only the well-known highlights but also lesser-known destinations that many travelers would otherwise overlook. Our route suggestions often come as a pleasant surprise to our customers. Please note that our advice is limited to a general route outline rather than a detailed day-by-day itinerary with driving distances, campsites or accommodation recommendations.

Pick-up and drop-off

Can we collect or return a camper at the airport?

No. You can never collect or return a camper at an airport in Australia, only at a nearby depot.

Is a transfer to and from the camper depots free of charge?

In Australia, transfers between the airport or your accommodation and the camper depot are generally at your own expense, both when collecting and returning your 4WD camper.

What is the best way to travel to and from the camper depots?

A taxi is the easiest and fastest way to travel to and from a camper depot. Taxis in Australia are affordable.

Is a credit card compulsory when hiring a camper?

Yes. When hiring a camper in Australia, you must present a valid credit card when collecting the vehicle. Paying the security bond with a debit card is not permitted.

Which credit cards are accepted when collecting a camper?

You can pay the camper’s security bond using one of the following credit cards: Mastercard, Visa (both always accepted) or American Express (not accepted at all depots). A detailed quote will clearly specify which credit cards are accepted at the relevant pickup depot. Since 1 October 2026, no credit card transaction fees are charged when paying the bond.
