What the crossing involves

SeaLink runs the car ferry between Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula and Penneshaw on the island, several times a day in both directions. The crossing takes about 45 minutes and check-in is at least 30 minutes before departure. Passengers are rarely the limit; the vehicle deck is what books out, so book early. Online booking covers vehicles up to 5.9 meters long and under 2.3 meters high, including roof loads. A campervan over 5 meters long or over 2.3 meters high is booked through the SeaLink Sales Centre on 13 13 01.

What permitted means for your hire

Permitted means the conditions of hire allow the camper on Kangaroo Island, and the ferry crossing is part of those conditions. It does not reserve a vehicle, a date or a place on the ferry. Mention the crossing when you inquire, so it is confirmed with your quote, and book the ferry once the camper is confirmed. The vehicle fare covers the camper only; the driver and each passenger pay a passenger fare.

Questions about Kangaroo Island

How do I book the ferry before I know the camper’s make and model?

Book online and tick ‘This is a hire car’. Once you have collected the camper, call SeaLink on 13 13 01 with its make and model. A camper above the online limits is booked by phone from the start.

Can I stay in the camper during the crossing?

No. Only the driver boards in the vehicle; everyone else walks on, and nobody stays on the vehicle deck while the ferry is under way.

What if the ferry is fully booked?

You can move your booking to another sailing when space comes up, or list the camper as standby at the terminal before departure. Standby does not guarantee a place.
