What the drive involves

The Tanami Track runs north-west from the Stuart Highway near Alice Springs across the Tanami Desert to Halls Creek in the Kimberley. Parts of the Northern Territory end are sealed; the rest is gravel and sand with heavy corrugations and road trains. Fuel is sold in a few communities along the way, at limited hours, so carry enough for long stretches.

What written approval means for your hire

Written approval means the trip is approved before you collect the camper and noted on your rental agreement. Ask for it when you book: approval can be refused, or come with conditions such as the season, a satellite phone or travel with a second vehicle. Driving there without it breaches the hire terms, and damage on the way is usually not covered.

Questions about the Tanami Track

Do I need a permit for the Tanami Track?

Not to drive the main road. Leaving it, or visiting a community off the road, needs a permit from the Central Land Council.

How long does the Tanami Track take?

Allow two to three days between Alice Springs and Halls Creek at a steady pace, longer after rain or grading.

Does the Tanami Track close?

Yes, after heavy rain, mostly in the wet season. Check road reports for both the Northern Territory and Western Australia before you set out.
