Who answers your email

Richard Haze founded Australia Campers and still reads every inquiry. His first Australian road trip was in 1993, with his wife, from Cairns to Melbourne in a Holden ute camper. Family journeys followed, from a few weeks to six months, mostly by 4WD car or camper. He has given talks about traveling Australia for more than thirty years and is one of the most experienced Australia travel specialists in the Netherlands.

Laura Anderson runs the Australian office in Parramatta. Between the Sydney and Utrecht desks, someone is awake in your time zone to work through a route, a camper layout or a supplier's terms with you.

We have been stuck too

Digging out a stranger's car on K'gari in 2000. The advice on these pages comes from days like this one, not from a brochure.

We have covered many tens of thousands of kilometers across Australia in about every setup a rental fleet offers: a 4WD bushcamper, a station wagon with camping gear, a Holden ute with a canopy, a 4WD with an off-road camper trailer or caravan, a five-berth motorhome, a hi-top campervan, a 4WD with two rooftop tents, a buy-back 4WD and our own car.

A 4WD camper is simply the best way to see the country. We love the scale of the outback, the dirt roads and the national parks few people reach. Traveling that way regularly keeps our knowledge current, so what we tell you about a track, a season or a vehicle is something we have checked ourselves.

Our story

The travel came first. After that 1993 trip, Richard spent years giving Australia travel talks for travel organizations such as Australia Express and World Contact Travel, long before most of the people in the room had booked anything. From 2002 he also arranged campervan and motorhome hire under the Totally Campers name, handed on in 2005 to former Dutch residents living in Melbourne.

Australia Campers followed, established under the registered name Discovery Campertours. The early websites served Dutch-speaking travelers with 2WD campers; in 2012 a dedicated 4WD camper site opened the business to travelers worldwide. Off-road travel and traveling with children have been our specialties ever since.

Our websites since 2003

The first sites were aimed at Dutch-speaking travelers and listed only 2WD rental campers. Each one is still readable in the Internet Archive; this site, launched in autumn 2026, is the fifth.
